How to Choose the Right Braces for a Tuxedo

Auteur : Charlotte Bonnardot / 27 juin 2025

We can all agree—no one wants to look like a stuffed veal roast in braces, right? Especially not just because we’re unsure how to wear them or what to pair them with. Braces may have a touch of the old-school about them… that charming vintage flair. And let’s face it, they’re definitely back in style! But slipping on a pair of braces doesn’t automatically make you a trendy hipster or the king of the dancefloor. To truly pull them off, you need to know how to wear them well. In this guide, we’ll show you how to choose the right braces to wear with a tuxedo—and wear them with confidence.

What to Consider When Choosing Braces

To pick the perfect pair of braces for a tuxedo, it’s important to get a clear overview of the different types available. There’s quite a range, but the most popular styles remain clip-on braces and button-on braces.

The first type is versatile and can attach to almost any kind of trousers, while the second is more traditional and requires trousers with brace buttons. If your wardrobe consists mostly of jeans, clip-on braces are likely your best bet.

You’ll also need to consider the colours of your outfit. If your braces clash with the rest of your look, it could be a total disaster. For example, braces can be colour-coordinated with your formal shoes for a polished effect. But above all, stick to the golden rule: no more than three colours in your outfit.

How to Put On Braces with a Tuxedo

To wear your braces properly, there’s one key thing to keep in mind: the placement of the clips (or button-on tabs).

We believe braces are just as practical as belts—you simply need the right technique to adjust the tension and make sure there’s no slack.

When it comes to positioning the clips or tabs, make sure the back strap is centred along your spine. At the front, attach the braces in a way that keeps the straps perfectly vertical—this will ensure a neat and elegant line.

How to Choose the Right Removable Braces: Button or Clip?

Our braces collections are of excellent quality. The removable fastening system has the great advantage of offering two ways to wear them. In other words, you can choose to wear your braces with button tabs or with clips—simply by unscrewing the attachment.

As for button-on braces, they offer plenty of flexibility even for trousers that don’t have buttons. You can just switch out the tabs for clips, which are easy to install.

If you’re wearing a tuxedo, we recommend going for removable braces with leather tabs. There’s a wide range of high-quality options, always with several ways to attach the braces to your trousers.

You can either go for leather tabs (which come with six buttons), or opt for reinforced stainless-steel clips lined with rubber to avoid marking your clothing. We offer a variety of materials and colours—so take your pick from the best styles and choose the ones you like most.

Just one important note: don’t wear braces with a cummerbund or a belt—they don’t mix well. 😉

And if you don’t feel like sewing buttons onto your trousers, there’s a simple solution: clip-on buttons—super practical!
